King John`s Castle Located in Trim, the “Power and the Glory” exhibition brings to reality the lifestyle of Norman times. King John`s Castle, built in 1220, is the largest and best preserved Norman castle in Ireland and was used as a location for the award winning film Braveheart. Hill of Tara Located in Trim it is embraced as the spiritual capital of Ireland, roots of Irish legend and folklore are entrenched in mystical domain of Tara. It was the Hill of Tara that the Ard Ri or High King was crowned, hence its title as the Seat of the High Kings of Ireland. Carbury Castle They were originally a Norman family from England who came over with Strongbow. In the 15th century it was taken by the native Irish and in 1562 it was granted to the Colley Family. They were the ancestors of the Dukes of Wellington. Arthur Pomeroy, who later became Lord Haberton, obtained the lands of Newberry through marriage to Mary Colley in 1747. The Colley family were at this time living in Carbury Castle. It appears that the castle was abandoned in the late 1700s. |
